Introduction

 

Egypt is one of the countries in which ICTARB is being piloted.. Working with its partners, ICTDAR is providing hardware, software, and training for four centers allowing more then 500 visually-impaired individuals to get ICT training and have access to knowledge through a Braille and Audio library, and ultimately helping them become more independent and better integrated in their communities.

Activities & Outcomes


Establishment of community facilities to provide ICT services for the visually impaired

  • Pilot Locations.

    • Activity: Determine 4 pilot locations for implementing the project
    • Prime: Resala in consultation with ICTDAR
    • Outcome: 4 locations were selected in Cairo, Heliopolis, Alexandria and Fayoum
    • Justification: Major cities with large numbers of target beneficiaries
    • Remarks: The Giza center serves the needs of 250 visually impaired persons from the immediate area, as well as others from surrounding communities.

  • Hardware Installation - Giza .

    • Activity: Install 16 PCs, 2 Braille printers and 11 recorders
    • Prime: MCIT
    • Outcome: 16 PCs were provided and installed by MCIT
    • Remarks: The Braille printers were paid for by Vodafone. 11 recorders are still outstanding

  • Software Installation - Giza .

    • Activity: Install 16Ibsar software.
    • Prime: Sakhr & ICTDAR
    • Outcome: Purchased and installed 16 Ibsar SW packages
    • Remarks: ICTDAR and Sakhr Software split the cost of the Ibsar SW.

  • Network Installation - Giza .

    • Activity: LAN & Internet connectivity
    • Prime: MCIT
    • Outcome: Servers & routers were provided by MCIT, configured and installed. Internet access was provided by Vodafone.
    • Remarks: Giza centre is connected. 

  • Hardware Installation - Alexandria .

    • Activity: Install 10 PCs and 2 Braille printer
    • Prime: MCIT
    • Outcome: 2 Braille printers were paid for by Vodafone.
    • Remarks: In progress

  • Software Installation - Alexandria .

    • Activity: Install 10 Ibsar SW packages.
    • Prime: Sakhr
    • Outcome: 10 Ibsar SW packages were purchased; installation pending
    • Remarks: Vodafone and Sakhr Software split the cost of the IBSAR SW.

    • Remarks: The second Braille printer will be provided by Vodafone

    • Activity: Install MS software and 4 Ibsar SW packages.

    • Outcome: MS and Ibsar were installed.
    • Remarks: The MS SW packages were purchased by Vodafone. Vodafone and Sakhr Software split the cost of the Ibsar SW packages.

  • Network Installation - Heliopolis

    • Activity: LAN & Internet connectivity
    • Prime: Barclays Bank
    • Outcome: Heliopolis is connected.

    • Activity: Install 10 PCs and 1 Braille printer
    • Prime: MCIT
    • Remarks: DUE IN 2006

    A- Skills Development - Institutional

 

  • Training of Trainers - Giza.
  • Activity: Train 10 people on Ibsar SW
  • Prime: Sakhr Software
  • Outcome: Sakhr provided training for 10 people on its own premises from July 11 th. until July 16 th. The purpose is to build the skills and resources in Resala to meet the needs of the visually impaired persons in integrating information and communication technology to better accomplish their development activities.
  • Remarks: One week full training course (40 hours)

 

  • Knowledge Transfer - Giza

    • Activity: Provide technical and management guidance to the participating NGO - Resala Prime: ICTDAR
    • Outcome: Resala will be able to roll out future centers with less involvement from ICTDAR
    • Remarks: Completed

  • Training of Trainers – Alexandria & Heliopolis

    • Activity: Resala trainers from Giza center will do the TOT for 10 Alexandria trainees and 10 Heliopolis trainees

    • Activity: Resala trainers from Giza center will do the TOT in Fayoum

B- Skills Development - Individual

  •   Train the Beneficiaries - Giza.
  • Activity: Provide training for the visually impaired
  • Prime: Resala
  • Outcome: 13 persons completed their training since the launching of the center.
  • Remarks: 150 visually impaired persons are taking training at the present time. In addition, many deaf & mute are utilizing the same facility to learn ICT skills.

 

  • Train the Beneficiaries – Alexandria, Heliopolis & Fayoum.

    • Activity: Provide training for the visually impaired
    • Prime: Resala

    • Remarks: These centers are not in operation yet. Therefore, no end users have been trained.

 

 C- Audio/ Braille Library - Giza

  •   Audio/ Braille library - Giza.
  • Activity: Set up library and provide resources
  • Prime: Resala
  • Outcome: Library is operational. Some material available in Braille
  • Remarks: To date, 100 visually impaired persons are regular users of the library.
