Introduction

ICTDAR is involved in several activities for M/SME support in Somalia. An ICT for M/SMEs Training of Trainers session has already been held in 2005. The next steps are to hold an ICT for M/SMEs awareness raising workshop and to proceed with the creation of the first pilot Community Access Center, in preparation for wider rollout and a fuller implementation of all MASHCROATI activities.

ICTDAR provides technical assistance and strategic advice pertaining to the project’s development and activities

    • Contribute to the funding of the project (introduction to IT policy workshop and M/SMEs train the trainer workshop)
    • Provide technical assistance/expertise/capacity building

UNDP Somalia is responsible for:

    • Project management
    • Partial funding
    • Selection of local partners and beneficiaries to seek sustainability and build on training received during the course of the project

  • Access Center:

    • Activity: Setting up a pilot Community Access Center
    • Prime: Local community NGO in Hargeisa
    • Outcome: On hold, pending setting of appropriate date.

  • Capacity Building- TOT:

    • Activity: Training of Trainers – M/SMEs
    • Prime: ICTDAR
    • Outcome: Completed
    • Remarks: A 5 day (May 21-25 th, 2005) ICT for M/SMEs workshop was held in Hargeisa. A total of 15 (8 males and 7 females) from various NGOs and M/SMEs.

      The comprehensive seminar covered:
      • Strategic use of ICT by M/SMEs
      • M/SMES’s Business planning
      • ICT for M/SMEs Business Planning
      • Introduction to marketing for M/SMEs
      • Know your clients
      • Sales and promotion
      • Costing & pricing for M/SMEs
      • Record and book keeping for M/SMEs
      • Budgeting for M/SMEs
      • Purchasing and inventory control
      • Business planning financial strategy
      • Networking and partnership building
      • Visit to appropriate model Enterprises
        In addition, relevant ICT applications on each of the above subjects were used as examples.

    • Prime: ICTDAR
    • Outcome: Planned for 2006
    • Remarks: Intended for Representative M/SMEs from all M/SMEs sectors.
